Skyview 2 Battery Energy Storage System (BESS)
About the Project
Our team is helping build the Skyview 2 Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), a 411 MW / 1,560+ MWh clean-energy infrastructure project designed to support Ontario’s growing electricity demand.
Once operational, the facility will be capable of storing enough electricity to power more than 400,000 homes for up to four hours. By storing electricity when demand is lower and releasing it during peak periods, the project will help improve grid stability and support a more resilient energy system.
The project is being developed by Skyview BESS Inc., a joint venture between subsidiaries of Algonquins Power & Utilities Corp. and Power Sustainable Energy Infrastructure PSEIP, with PCL Constructors Canada Inc. providing asset management.
What We Delivered
Our integrated site preparation and servicing scope includes a comprehensive civil package supporting development of the approximately 30-acre site.
Work includes civil works, access road construction, stormwater management pond construction, substation development, and the installation of approximately 400–500 battery containers across the site.
Our team is also responsible for underground services and the civil infrastructure required to support the facility as construction progresses toward operations, targeted for 2027.
Innovation
Keeping work moving through the winter required close coordination and practical problem-solving.
Approximately 5,000 concrete foundations were required across the site. Our team worked closely with the customer’s engineers and management team to maintain efficiency while meeting the project’s technical requirements. Pouring concrete through winter conditions required additional planning and resources to maintain the temperatures needed for proper curing.
Through that collaboration, foundation designs were modified to improve the schedule and optimize project efficiency, allowing a majority of the civil scope to be completed throughout the winter months.
Impact
Once complete, Skyview 2 will provide enough stored energy to power nearly 400,000 homes, contributing significant capacity to Ontario’s electricity grid and helping meet growing energy needs.
For our team, the project brings together large-scale site development, servicing, road construction, stormwater management and concrete work on a major energy infrastructure project. It is another example of how collaboration, technical expertise and practical solutions can keep complex projects moving—even through challenging winter conditions.
