Safety is fundamental to who we are and how we work. As a COR2020-certified partner, we continuously invest in refining procedures that ensure every Tomlinson site is physically and psychologically safe for our employees and partners.

Our integrated safety approach has been recognized by industry leaders, including the Infrastructure Health and Safety Association (IHSA), the Ontario Stone, Sand and Gravel Association (OSSGA), and the Ontario Hot Mix Producers Association (OHMPA). Most recently, R.W. Tomlinson Limited achieved OHSAS 18001 certification, further reinforcing our commitment to building a safety-first culture across every level of the organization.

An Excellent CVOR rating ranks us in the top 1.15% of commercial carriers in Ontario, highlighting our superior record in areas like collisions, inspections, convictions, and violations.

Safety in Practice

Safety governs all aspects of our job site operations, often complex, large-scale infrastructure projects. On-site and in-office, we foster a culture where safety drives growth, fuels accountability, and empowers every employee. We maintain industry-leading standards through rigorous training, continuous improvement, and leadership commitment.

Work Planned

Digital safety forms, Pre-Start Inspections (PSIs) and Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs) help our teams identify hazards and establish a clear plan before work begins.

Risks Controlled

Risk assessments help our teams evaluate potential risks, establish the right controls and communicate the plan so everyone understands how the work will be completed safely.

Results Delivered

Our teams execute the plan with a focus on safety, quality and schedule. When conditions change, we reassess the work and adjust the plan to maintain safe, consistent execution.

Leading Through Industry Collaboration

Tomlinson’s integrated approach to worker health and safety is upheld through compliance with government regulations, membership of industry bodies, and our internal Health and Safety Program. Our staff play instrumental roles in the health and safety committees of several organizations, including the National Capital Heavy Construction Association (NCHCA), the Ottawa Regional Labour Management Health and Safety Committee, the Canadian Registered Safety Professionals (CRSP), the Canadian Society of Safety Engineers (CSSE), and ISNetworld.

Tomlinson maintains a strong safety standard requiring all employees to undergo thorough, ongoing training. The program includes onboarding orientation, annual audits, refresher courses, and in-cab evaluations for Commercial Vehicle Operators (CVOR). We reinforce our safety-first culture through the internal Safety Recognition Program, which celebrates divisions that achieve zero lost-time injuries.

Our training courses cover a broad range of topics, including Working at Heights, Confined Space and Propane Handling, Forklift Operation, Powered Elevating Work Platforms (PEWP), Common Core and Generic Frontline Supervisor training, Traffic Control, WHMIS, Respirator Fit Testing, First Aid/CPR, Lockout and Tagout procedures, and Chainsaw Safety.
